YOLO Bhutan
The land of “The Thunder Dragon”, Drukyul, as Bhutan is known here, is a land of arresting contrasts – and uncommon harmony. It’s a place where people can find peace and do business, experience living traditions and discover wilderness teeming with life.
Bhutan is a tiny Buddhist kingdom nestled between China and India in the heart of the eastern Himalayas. She is famous for its imposing monasteries, colossal fortifications and breath taking scenery. It is divided into 20 districts, each with different traditions and ways of life.
The Bhutanese way of life is a perfect blend of tradition and modernity and gives the country a unique identity that sets it apart from all others. Because of its uniqueness, visitors to Thimphu, the kingdom’s capital city, are eager to immerse themselves in the local culture and customs.
Bhutan’s history is both ancient and recent, and weaves together folklore and fact. This, allowing unique traditions and ways of life to flourish. Some examples of unique cultural pursuits that continue to evolve today – like archery or da, the National sport; protected arts and crafts – zorig chusum – from ceramics to blacksmithing, and sculpture to carpentry, have been passed down. This vibrant legacy has created a culture that’s tangible everywhere from the humblest home to the most important dzong.
Given Bhutan’s lowland valleys and snow-capped peaks that easily reach 7,000m above sea level. There are lush, subtropical dells, pine-forested hillsides and mountain glaciers – and at every elevation, the landscape teems with wildlife. With more than 70% of Bhutan swathed in pristine woodland, biodiversity thrives here. This is nature at its wildest.
Bhutan is full of flavour. The streets of Thimphu, Paro and Phuentsholing bustle with locals working and socialising, and guests exploring markets and museums. Meanwhile, in tranquil valleys people churn milk into butter, gather wild greens from the forest, and chat over suja, or butter tea. There’s a pace – and a place – for everyone.
What are you waiting for?

Fly by either Drukair or Bhutan Airlines. Paro is the only international airport that covers destinations like Bangkok, Singapore, Kathmandu, New Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra, Guwahati, and Bodh Gaya.
The road entering to Bhutan is through Phuentsholing, in the south, through Gelephu, in the central region and Samdrup Jongkhar, in the east.
Paro airport is daylight restricted, and the flights are totally dependent on the weather. As a result, sometimes flights are delayed. It is therefore a good idea to keep at least 24 hours of transit time for connecting flights out of Paro. You might also want to consider traveling on a non-restricted ticket so that if you miss a connecting flight, you can be rerouted or seated on the first available carrier.
Sometimes flights into Paro are disrupted because of unfavourable weather conditions. If this occurs, the flight will stop for the night at the transit airport. To be prepared, you may want to carry your essential personal items in your carry-on luggage.
Months of March, April, May (spring season) and September, October, November (autumn season) are high/Peak season for the tourists.
Flora and Fauna: Bhutan is known for its stunning natural beauty. In spring, the landscape bursts into colourful blooms as flowers start to blossom. It’s also a time when many species of birds and wildlife are more active.
Festivals: Bhutanese culture comes alive with several vibrant festivals or tshechus held during the spring months. These festivals showcase traditional dances, music, and rituals, offering visitors a chance to witness the rich cultural heritage of Bhutan. The famous festivals in Bhutan – Paro festival starts from 21 March till 25 March 2024. There are other numerous festivals held in Spring months like Talo Festival, Gomphu Kora Festival, Gasa Festival and Domkhar Festival.
Trekking and Outdoor Activities: The comfortable weather in spring makes it an excellent time for trekking and outdoor adventures. Trails become more accessible as the snow melts, allowing for clearer paths and better visibility. Popular treks like the Jomolhari Trek or the Druk Path Trek are especially enjoyable during this time.
The months of June, July, August (summer season) and December, January, February (winter season) is usually a low season for the tourists. The winter months are cold at night, but the days are quite warm with bright and clear blue skies. In the summer season, Bhutan receives more rainfall than other months, but still gets bright sunny days.
If long overnight treks are not your thing, short and scenic hikes will give you a taste of the Bhutanese outdoors. Hiking in Bhutan is one of the most popular activities to do. With a myriad of options all over the country, these gentler hiking trails can all be completed within a day.
